Tripod Pencil Grip

tripod-video-1.png

Developmentally and historically writing grips have been classified according to the position of the thumb, the number of fingers on the tool, and the ability to produce small graded movements using the thumb, index, and middle fingers to control the writing tool.

Developmentally the tripod pencil grip refines with age and typically reaches it's maturity between 4.5 and 7 years of age. Prior to this time you will see a greater number of fingers used to hold the pencil, with less of an ability to dissociate the fingers of the hand and produce small graded movements of the fingers.

Historically the dynamic tripod grip is the pencil prehension classification considered to be the most mature and efficient. It is characterized by the position of the thumb, the three finger placement on the pencil, the optimal open web space, and the ability to use small graded movements of the thumb, index, and middle fingers to control the writing tool. However there are also many functional variations of a tripod grip considered to be functional and efficient. It is up to you and/or a professional to determine what you hope to gain from the Tri-Loop Pencil Grip. Whether it is simply improving functional ability or aspiring to the historically best in class, the dynamic tripod pencil grip.
